Why this new licensing partnership matters

Jisc plays a vital role in the UK education system, supporting all publicly funded universities and colleges with digital infrastructure, licensing and strategic services. As the national consortium for education technology, Jisc provides institutions with access to secure networks, open access tools, learner analytics and sector-wide agreements.

Through its CHEST platform, Jisc negotiates trusted, price-guaranteed licensing deals that help educators adopt innovative technologies easily and affordably. The decision to include TeacherMatic in CHEST followed two successful pilot programmes with a third underway, driven by real demand from educators.

Hannah Lawrence from Jisc said:

“After two successful pilots with the Jisc AI team and a third in the works, we’re incredibly pleased to have this partnership in place with TeacherMatic. After great member feedback, we’re excited to provide simplified access to this tool through the CHEST platform.”

This licensing partnership is about more than procurement. It’s about enabling teachers, curriculum leaders, quality managers, and support teams to work smarter with AI that’s ethical, efficient and designed explicitly for education.

Peter Kilcoyne shared:

“We’re thrilled to be working with Jisc to expand access to our platform. Their CHEST platform is respected across the sector, and we’re proud to be joining its roster of impactful, trusted tools. This partnership is about making ethical, time-saving AI available to everyone without barriers.”

Here’s how the licensing partnership helps organisations across the sector:

  • Trusted, simplified procurement via the Jisc CHEST platform
  • Price-guaranteed licences for all Jisc member organisations
  • Institution-wide access to 150+ AI tools built for education
  • Cross-department adoption using tools for teaching, leadership, quality, HR and more
  • Ongoing support through webinars, resources and expert engagement
  • A partnership shaped by real feedback from the UK education community

Putting AI into practice

The webinar focused on procurement and real impact.

As Peter Kilcoyne explained:

“Over 150 different generators designed in partnership with practitioners to do day-to-day tasks.”

Popular use cases covered in the webinar included:

  • Feedback generation – speeding up the marking process with consistent, rubric-aligned feedback
  • Lesson planning and resource creation – creating engaging, accessible materials in minutes
  • Leadership and quality support – generating SARs, QIPs and reports to streamline compliance
  • Mock interview questions and tasks – helping students prepare for real-world job interviews

Peter Kilcoyne added:

“Across many organisations, we partner up with practitioners, teachers and more recently, with managers as we’re developing some management tools to build the tool exactly, so it fits the needs of people in universities and in colleges. We use this co-development model where everything is driven by our customers and built in partnership with them.”

TeacherMatic’s tools aren’t just for the classroom, they support whole-institution innovation. From curriculum planning to leadership communications and quality assurance, departments across colleges and universities are embedding AI into daily practice.

Real-world insights from the University of Chester’s Approach

At the University of Chester, TeacherMatic is embedded into daily practice, supporting both academic and professional services staff. As part of Jisc’s pilot programme, 50 academics trialled the tool, using it to create resources, generate feedback and design new teaching activities.

Nora Milne, Head of Digital Education at the University of Chester, stated:

“We ran weekly TeacherMatic challenges, so we got people to use different generators, maybe generators they wouldn’t have otherwise used. That was really valuable, because it meant that people got to experiment in a structured way and share their outputs.”

Bury College’s Approach to AI and Workload Reduction

Amanda Sidall also shared how they are using TeacherMatic at Bury College as part of its digital and wellbeing strategy, helping staff reduce workload while improving the quality of teaching resources.

“Staff report saving hours. I look at the analytics pretty much every day with TeacherMatic… and it can be as high as 6 hours saved on research, resource creation, scheme of work planning and assessment.”
